Summary

Taking the test independently means managing your file directly with the DGT, without going through a driving school. You only pay the official fees (€94.05 for the exam fee + medical test), saving you typical driving school charges like enrollment and administration fees. In this article we explain the requirements, the step-by-step process (online and in-person), what happens after applying for the exam, how to check your results, the validity of passing the theory test, and we provide all the official DGT links at the end.

Information based on official DGT documentation and the Traffic Electronic Headquarters.

What does taking the test independently mean?

Taking the test independently means you manage your file and exam application directly with the DGT, without going through a driving school. It's a completely valid route and usually works out cheaper for the theory part because you still pay the official costs (DGT fee and medical test) but you save on the additional charges that many driving schools charge, such as enrollment, administration, and processing fees.

At the end of the article you'll find all the relevant official links so you can do everything without searching on your own.

Basic requirements before starting

Who can submit the application

You can do it yourself or someone else can do it on your behalf if you authorize them. The DGT has representation options through their Registry of Powers of Attorney.

Minimum age

For the Permiso B, the minimum age is 18 years. You can take the first theory exam sitting up to three months before turning 18.

What you need to apply for the theory test independently

Medical test (Psicotécnico)

Psychophysical aptitude report issued by an authorized Driver Recognition Center. The certificate is valid for 90 days.

Exam fee (€94.05)

Fee 2.1 "Obtaining driving license". Very important: each application entitles you to two exam sittings.

Official application form (Mod. 04)

Official DGT "Application for aptitude tests" form.

Identification

If you do the process in person, you must prove your identity with original and valid documentation according to your situation.

How to register independently step by step

Online option

The DGT describes the process in their official guide, even indicating the text you should put in the subject line when submitting through their electronic registry, as well as noting that you should select your Provincial Office as the destination organization.

1
Purchase the fee

Pay fee 2.1 online and download the payment receipt.

2
Submit the application

Send form Mod. 04 through the indicated channel with documentation: fee receipt and medical test.

3
Keep the receipt

Keep the registration receipt as proof of your application.

In-person option

If you prefer to do it in person, the DGT indicates that before going to offices you must request an appointment. You can also pay by card directly at the office.

After submitting the application

When the DGT processes your application, they will manage your exam appointment. If you already have an appointment and for a justified reason you cannot attend, the DGT allows cancellation of the appointment in exceptional cases.

How to check your theory test result

The DGT allows you to check your result online. Results remain published for 15 days from the exam date.

Validity of passing the theory test and file transfer

2-year validity

If you pass the theory test, the aptitude declaration remains valid for two years from the day after passing.

File transfer

If you move or want to take the exam in another province, you can do so by submitting a transfer request at the destination Provincial Office.
